Funding from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive will enable L/Derry day centre for street drinkers to remain open until the end of April 2016

Depaul wants to extend gratitude to the many people from the statutory agencies, voluntary sector and also Councillor Elisha McCallion, First Mayor of Derry City, and Strabane District Council for their continued support in addressing the funding issues facing Foyle Haven​ Day Centre.

Depaul has met with the staff team to update them on the funding situation. Depaul has received support from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to extend the funding for one further month to the end of April 2016. Staff have been informed that protective notice will continue for one month​. There have been no redundancy notices issued. Considerable efforts are​ ​continuing to be ​made with​ ​a​​ ​range of statutory funders​ ​to secure the service into the future and discussions will continue with a range of agencies in the nex​t​ ​​few weeks on the longer term sustainability of the day centre.

About Foyle Haven Day Centre

  • Foyle Haven Day Centre is a comprehensive and integrated service providing assistance and support to street drinkers.
  • Foyle Haven Day Centre was originally opened in December 2001 in direct response to the large number of street drinkers congregating in the L/Derry City Centre.
  • In 2011 the original management committee decided the requirements of running the centre was growing beyond their capacity and a decision was made to merge Foyle Haven with Depaul.
  • In 2011 Foyle Haven Day Centre won a GlaxoSmithKline Impact Award in recognition of its outstanding contribution to improving health care among street drinkers in L/Derry City.
