Depaul comments on April Homeless Figures

Current solutions must remain beyond Covid-19 easing period

Thursday, 4th of June. Today saw the release of homeless figures from the Department of Housing for the month of April showing there was a decrease in the number of people experiencing homelessness for the third consecutive month. The number of people who are homeless in Ireland now stands at 9,335.

The number of adults who are homelessness now stands at 6,262 a drop of 290 on the previous month. The number of children who are homeless now stands at 3,073 a drop of 282 on the previous month with the number of homeless families now standing at 1,339 a drop of 149 on the previous month.

Depaul's Director of Services and Development Dermot Murphy commented;

“We welcome the decrease in homeless figures for the second consecutive month and recognise the hard work that is being done by everybody at this time. However, we must approach this good news with a degree of caution as there is a distinct possibility of more people becoming homeless post Covid-19.

"Vital measures that have been put in place during this pandemic, such as rent freezes, must remain for a longer period of time if we are to prevent any post-Covid surge in homelessness. Efforts must continue to provide adequate housing solutions, protect those currently in homeless accommodations and prevent any further rise in homelessness as a result of Covid-19."
