Depaul helps people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Press Release 21.03.2016

March 21st, 2016

Charity calls for an urgent, coordinated response to tackling homelessness.

Depaul expresses its devastation over the death of a homeless woman in Belfast, and calls for an urgent coordinated response to tackling homelessness in the city.

Ms. Kerry Anthony MBE, CEO of Depaul, says “We are all deeply saddened of the death of a homeless woman in Belfast. The woman had accessed Depaul services before and was known by the staff and service users of our Stella Maris service in Belfast. Our thoughts are with her friends and family.

Depaul calls for an urgent, coordinated response to tackling the issue of homelessness in Belfast.  The impact of homelessness on a person’s mental and physical health and life chances is devastating. We see on a daily basis what the lack of a home can do to a person’s health, well-being and life chances, and our staff and volunteers work steadfastly to help people who are homeless access more permanent accommodation and vital supports, and move away from homelessness for good. Evidence shows that a stable home is the ideal base from which to address such issues as mental and physical illness and addiction and Depaul is committed through our Housing First approach to provide this opportunity to our service users.

Voluntary, statutory and charity bodies must work together to deliver a cohesive response to homelessness, to prevent another tragedy like this from happening again. This response must be focussed on bringing people in from the streets as a priority, and helping them to access accommodation and support services. No one should have to sleep rough on our streets.”

Kerry Anthony MBE, CEO of Depaul, is available for interviews.
