Foyle Haven Day Centre

‘It has been nothing but positive since I came here to Foyle Haven, it has given me confidence and I am now taking pride in everything I do and it’s all for the better’

Foyle Haven was established in 2001 by a group of committed people from the local community who wanted to provide support to local street drinkers. Demand for its service grew to such a degree that in 2010 it needed to amalgamate with a national charity to ensure sustainability into the future. In 2011, Foyle Haven amalgamated with Depaul.

Foyle Haven operates as a day service where street drinkers can access practical assistance and support to reduce the harm caused by their use of alcohol. Practical assistance provided includes hot meals, access to shower and laundry facilities and a programme of regular social activities for adults with a dependence on alcohol.

The Foyle Haven team offer a comprehensive support service to people with acute addiction issues. Each person is encouraged to make use of all the relevant services available to them and identified for them by the Foyle Haven Team and to participate in social activities within the centre.

The health worker provides health-related support to people accessing the day centre based on their individual needs. This might include support to make contact with relevant services, accompanying them to appointments and working closely with other agencies to ensure that each person has access to health services appropriate to their individual needs.

Since its merge in 2011, the service has expanded to include a Harm Reduction Floating Support Service and a Housing First Service which provides support around substance use and tenancy sustainment to people who are unable to attend the day service.

In 2011, Foyle Haven was awarded the Glaxo Smith Kline Impact Award for Community Health Development and an award for its achievements in Community Arts.

‘Foyle Haven has made me more outgoing and helped me to mix with other people. I used to live in the day and now I look forward to the future. The project staff at Foyle Haven have a down to earth friendly approach and there is no judgement’
