Testimonial Nana Abena Amankwa 2025

During my student placement at Depaul, I had the invaluable opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. From the outset, I was welcomed into a professional, compassionate environment where person-centered care, dignity, and empowerment were at the heart of every interaction.
One of the most impactful aspects of my placement was the opportunity to engage directly with service users, building trusting relationships and supporting them in their journey toward greater stability and independence. I facilitated life-skills workshops, assisted families and children with arts and crafts, assisted with care planning, and collaborated with multidisciplinary teams, gaining firsthand experience in trauma-informed practice, harm reduction approaches, and crisis intervention.
I was encouraged to reflect critically on my practice throughout my placement, enhancing my problem-solving, communication, and professional development skills. The guidance and mentorship from my Practice Educator and colleagues were instrumental in my growth, reinforcing my passion for social care and deepening my understanding of the complexities of homelessness.
My time at Depaul strengthened my professional competence and reaffirmed my commitment to advocacy, inclusion, and providing meaningful support to those in need. I am grateful for the experience and the invaluable lessons I have gained, which will undoubtedly shape my future practice in social care.
