In December 2002 Depaul opened the Aungier Street service, a service for street drinkers and people with acute alcohol issues. Based on the principles of harm reduction Aungier Street Hostel was the first of its kind in the Republic of Ireland. In 2008, the service was relocated to James Street, and is now called Orchid House.
Orchid House provides supported temporary accommodation (STA) for up to 30 men, women and couples with entrenched alcohol issues and complex needs. The service offers 24/7 support for residents, for up to a 6-month period through dedicated and individual keyworkers working with each person. Addressing street homelessness from a low threshold approach and harm reduction through alcohol management plan, working towards breaking the cycle of homelessness and establishing a pathway of support for our residents.
Orchid House aims to offer a homely environment to service users, supporting them to address the root causes of their homelessness and helping them to identify appropriate long term supported move-on opportunities.
Orchid House is situated in Dublin 8.
Orchid House operates in partnership with the Dublin Region Homeless Executive. Other partners include Safetynet.
