I applied for the Depaul Graduate Programme because it seemed like an amazing opportunity to put the theory I learned in college into practice. My hope is to help the most marginalised in society, make an impact and contribute to Depaul Ireland’s mission of ending homelessness and change the lives of those affected by it. The programme provides amazing training, opportunities and benefits to help me achieve these goals and kick-start my career.”
Having a background in psychology, I have previously worked with elderly and vulnerable individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s. I found this incredibly fulfilling, however I found I had some blind spots in my knowledge. Particularly, working with and understanding the situation of marginalised individuals as well as children. Seeing Depaul advertising the Graduate Programme Support Worker Role, I was aware of the services they provide and thought it would be a good fit for me. I am hoping to work with these marginalised groups and understand their side of the story.
I chose working in the homeless sector because it combined my theoretical knowledge on housing scarcity and my background in working with vulnerable children with my passion for fostering social change and supporting other people. Depaul specifically caught my eye because of its core values, most importantly the commitment to celebrating the potential of people, and the passion and energy you could feel from the staff. The graduate program has been a great way so far to be eased into the job and to get to know the organisation, people, goals, and the tools needed for the job. Everybody, from the training manager to the CEO, have been absolutely lovely and going out of their way to make us feel welcome, comfortable, and supported
