The Harm Reduction Floating Support service was established in 2013, building on the work that was being carried out within the Foyle Haven Day Centre. The service was developed in response to an identified need for outreach support across the Foyle area, providing assistance to individuals who were at risk of homelessness and helping them to maintain their tenancies.
Depaul’s Harm Reduction Floating Support service is a community-based service. The aim of the service is to prevent homelessness.
The service provides one-to-one confidential support to assist people who are experiencing difficulties with their tenancies and may be at risk of homelessness due to alcohol and substance abuse. The service takes a holistic approach, supporting individuals where they’re at, and addressing issues that could lead to homelessness.
We visit people at their request in their own homes, and tailor the support we offer to meet their particular needs and reduce the risk of homelessness.
Offer advice about maintaining tenancies
Reduce the harm experienced due to effects of alcohol and other substances
Provide practical assistance around benefits and health
Liaise with other organisations on behalf of service users
Support with independent living skills and budget management
Refer and sign-post to other relevant agencies
Provide opportunities to participate in a range of activities and events
We are an outreach service that works within the Foyle area. Our office address is 66-72 Strand Road, Derry / Londonderry, BT48 7AJ.
The service is available to individuals in tenancies provided by the Housing Executive, Housing Association, private rented sector and owner occupiers.
The Harm Reduction Floating Support service is available to anyone who feels they may need additional support in reducing the harmful effects of alcohol / substance use.
Each person is appointed a dedicated support worker who will work with them to create and implement a bespoke support plan depending on their personal needs.
Together, they agree on a way forward with a strong focus on current levels of substance use and the impact it has on health and wellbeing.
The support is very flexible and can last for up to 2 years.
Anyone can make a referral to our service. Referrals can be taken directly by any source, e.g. self-referral, family, GP, or other organisations / agencies with prior consent from the individual who is being referred.
