Depaul comments on latest Government Homeless Figures

Rise in figures disappointing

Wednesday, 27th of February. Today saw the release of homeless figures from the Department of Housing which showed an increase in the number of homeless people who accessed emergency accommodation in the month of January. Today’s figure shows there was a total of 9,987 adults and children who were registered as homeless last month.

The number of adults and children presenting as homeless rose from last month with 6,363 adults and 3,624 children now registered as homeless in Ireland. This represents an increase of 169 adults and an increase of 65 children from December's figures.

Depaul CEO Kerry Anthony commented on the figures;

“It is disappointing to see the figures rise again and to see that there are almost 10,000 people experiencing homelessness and living in emergency accommodation. The rise in both adults and children is disappointing given that last month’s figures showed a decrease in the numbers.

“The numbers suggest we need to do more in our efforts to stop individuals and families entering emergency accommodation. That requires input and action from all agencies and departments and we must ensure we are doing everything in our power to bring the numbers down.”
