Depaul comments on Homeless figures

Record numbers show that challenges still persist

Wednesday, 27th of March. Today saw the release of the homeless figures for the month of February. The release showed there are now over 10,000 people accessing emergency accommodation in Ireland, with the total figure now standing at 10,264.

The numbers have now risen two months in a row, each time representing a new record for those experiencing homelessness in Ireland. It showed an increase of 160 children and 117 adults from the previous month's figures. Representing a total rise of 277 adults and children. The number of children now stands at 3,784 with the total adults standing at 6,480.

Depaul CEO Kerry Anthony commented on the figures;

“To see the figures reach over 10,000 is hugely disheartening. It indicates that many challenges remain with regards to homelessness in Ireland. We need to be continuously looking at and monitoring the reasons behind these increases. However, it is not enough to identify the reasons, we must also act upon this knowledge.

“For any person or family to find themselves homeless can have a detrimental impact on their lives, no matter how brief their stay in homelessness is. We need to work together and look at ways of preventing people and families from entering homelessness and moving people out of it as quickly as possible.”
